Mauritian specialities Satini
Satini is the Creole word for chutney. As curries, chutneys play an important role in Mauritian dishes as the meal would not be complete without one or two chutneys to accompany them. In contrary of its country of origin, India, Satini has through the decades taken a wider role in Mauritian food. The mixture of spices is served also as a dip or appetizer as well as an accompaniment to various main dishes.
Mauritian snacks
The most popular local snacks are samoussas, gateaux piments, gateaux bringelles, gateaux pomme de terre, batons fromages are a delicacy to the mouth. The most common Mauritian food in every corner of the streets are dholl pourri (stuffed flatbread) and roti, it is a sort of pancake served with hot beans curry, tomato sauce known as chutney here and chilli of course. Depending on your taste buds you can vary your Mauritian food from mild to hot and spicy.
Millionaire salad:
Surrounded by sea, the seafood lovers can celebrate on many different fish and seafood dishes typical to the island. For instance, the famous, millionaire salad is a treat to the mouth. Made by shrimps, crayfish, oysters, crabs, prawns served with the heart of the palm tree, the millionaire salad is simply delicious.
The Curry
The Curry is a typical Indian dish prepared in different ways by different Mauritian families. Each of them has their own recipes namely – chicken curry, fish curry, pawns curry etc… It is a spicy dish with cumin, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, onion, tomatoes and coriander.
Chinese dish
Fried Noddles is a Chinese based dish. It consists of sautéed noodles, carrot, chopped cabbage mixed with chicken, prawns, all accompanied with garlic sauce to enhance the taste. Fried noodles are served in most Mauritian restaurants.
Spicy food
The Briani is made of rice sautéed, spices, vegetables, meat, chicken and fish. Served especially in Muslim weddings but most Mauritians enjoy each this quite spicy dish.
Vindaye The Vindaye is made of chicken, spices, vinegars and mustard. Accompanied with bread or rice, it is served cool.
Deer dishes
Deer curry, steamed deer and other dishes made of deer is a real delight. Hunted, it is a seasonal meat.
Pickled fruits
There is nothing more refreshing that pickled fruits when it is extremely hot. Stored in various forms and size of jars exposed in colorful stalls on the road, pickled fruits are made of seasonal fruits (mangoes, cucumber, olives, pineapples and so forth). The recipe is invariably the same: vinegar, sugar, salt and chili.
